Aliens vs. Predator: the Marine Campaign Review

Posted by Lance on 2nd March , 2010

A stand-up fight, or just another bug hunt? After finishing Aliens vs. Predator’s Marine story last night, I wanted to post some thoughts.  In a nutshell, die-hard fans of the franchise need not despair at the game’s mediocre critical reception – AvP is solid, playable, and fun. Rebellion has done a fantastic job with pacing [...]

Aliens vs Predator: Resist the Lure of the Hive Mind!

Posted by Lance on 23rd February , 2010

I came to an epiphany this morning.  (Sure, it was a trivial and geeky epiphany, but don’t be judging on my epiphanies, man!) After reading the mixed critical reviews of Aliens vs Predator last week, I had decided not to purchase the game, or to at least hold off until the price dropped. I realized that [...]

Mass Effect 2: Class Consciousness

Posted by Lance on 26th January , 2010

So, here I am, hot new copy of Mass Effect 2 in hand, work day complete, free time carved out, and ready to head home for some sweet, sweet sci fi gaming.  Everything should be awesomesauce for Lance.  Except one little thing – for the life of me, I can’t decide which class I want [...]

Sonic Breadcrumbs

Posted by Lance on 28th October , 2009

I’ve become quite a soundtrack fanboy over the past year or so.  My responsibilities at work have shifted such that I’m spending much more time in my office and less in the lab.  That said, my brain is wired in a fashion where music with lyrics is very distracting when I’m writing or reading. To [...]

Borderlands: Early Impressions

Posted by Lance on 22nd October , 2009

I finally got to play a little Borderlands last night.  I’m very pleased with the game, and Gearbox has delivered on the hype.  The game is not perfect, but has attained that nebulous plateau of polish, charm, and great gameplay that earns it the title of Good Game (TM). Gameplay-wise, Borderlands is a fairly straightforward [...]

Magic: the Gathering – Duels of the Planeswalkers (XBLA) reviewed

Posted by Lance on 19th June , 2009

Flash back to the late 1980s.  A Penn graduate student named Richard Garfield begins designing an interesting new card game called Magic: the Gathering.  Several years later, the 1993 commercial launch of Magic dumps the gaming industry on its head, singlehandedly spawning the bold new genre of collectible/customizable games still thriving worldwide. Back to June [...]

First Impressions: Magic: the Gathering – Duels of the Planeswalkers

Posted by Lance on 18th June , 2009

I checked out the demo of this new XBLA title this morning, playing first through the tutorial, and then one duel.  (I wasn’t, um, a bit late for work because of this…) Duels of the Planeswalkers is a faithful, unembellished digital implementation of the popular Wizards of the Coast collectible card game.  The interface seems [...]

Aliens: Colonial Marines – Game NOT Over, Man!

Posted by Lance on 12th January , 2009

Reports that Aliens: Colonial Marines was KIA were apparently only subversive Weyland-Yutani corporate propoganda. According to Dan Stapleton on the latest PC Gamer podcast, Sega PR reps insist that the game is still very much alive and that development is ongoing at Gearbox. Yay!

Aliens: Colonial Marines Exterminated? Aliens RPG set to hatch?

Posted by Lance on 24th November , 2008

Dammit! I had suspected that Gearbox’s Aliens: Colonial Marines title might be in serious risk of an airlocking, as news on its development has been sketchy at best. Looks like my fears were realized. I’m seriously disappointed though – this is probably my all-time favorite movie license. [sigh] Game over, man! (Sorry, someone had to [...]

Still Alive

Posted by Lance on 19th November , 2008

Wow – the ol’ blog is looking very neglected. Let’s start with a catch-up post. We’ve been pretty busy, and even more so at work, hence the lack of posts. Left 4 Dead Most of my gaming group got together last week to test drive the Left 4 Dead demo on XBL. Very freaking fun. [...]
